Carrie & Simon - Bird's Eye Cove, Vancouver Island Wedding Photographer

When Carrie and Simon contacted me about their wedding at Bird's Eye Cove, I was excited to get the chance to photograph a wedding at the farm in Cowichan Valley. I heard many wonderful things about the venue and the staff, and in 2016 they won Best Venue at the BC Wedding Awards. Nestled in Genoa Bay, the 300 acre property offers a variety of options for ceremony sites. It has a fully equipped bridal suite for getting ready and there is also a cabin down the hill for the groom and his groomsmen to use. There is the option to the venue cater the reception, and a slow roasted pig on a spit is a popular choice. My favourite part of the property is the receptions site. Held in a barn style room, it features solid wood beams and beautifully large windows with long tables. Ah, such a dream to photograph!

The day itself went off without a hitch. The bride, Carrie, is an event planner by day and didn't miss any of the details. With the help of Tam, from Blue Lilly Events, guests enjoyed a seamless day on the property. The ceremony took place later in the afternoon in the orchard. Bovine roamed freely in a pasture behind the couple as they said their vows. Simon, originally from New Zealand, had an international crowd of rugby friends who flew out to Vancouver Island to be present on his big day. There was lots of cheers and comradery all day long. After the ceremony the guests moved to the patio for games and cocktails, or to just chill in the outdoor lounge.

I was happy to get access to the barn on the other side of the property for portraits of the bride and groom. The wood panels let light leak through and Carrie and Simon got to spend a few moments alone having a dance. Then dinner was served and it was nothing short of spectacular. The London Chef had charcuterie boards along the tables and everyone feasted while guests stood up and toasted the new couple. For desert, the maid of honour Lydia, who is a professional baker, made a variety of beautiful cakes, each offering a different flavour pallet.
Here's what the day looked like.
Special thanks to Georgia Johnston for shooting the wedding alongside me!

Melissa & Reno - Galiano Island Wedding Photographer

The first time I met Melissa and Reno we went for a cocktail and chatted about their Galiano Island wedding. I knew right away these were my kind of people! They told me the details of their plans - a pizza party rehersal, an oceanside ceremony that included their dogs, delicious catering, friends taking turns DJing, and dancing late into the night.

One thing that was really important to them was they wanted their friends and family to get to enjoy a weekend away, connecting with each other and taking in the scenery at the Galiano Inn - and for good reason. The grounds themselves were beautiful with lush gardens, a koi pond, and little massage huts hidden amongst the trees. Ah, a photographer's dream!

Saturday was calling for rain and it came. Living on the coast, the chance of rain on your wedding day is a possibility. Melissa and Reno didn't let it bring down their spirits. They were smiles all morning long. Marika, the planner and owner of Rock Paper Square, had everything under control. There was a rain plan in place and the team was ready to set up the outdoor ceremony if the rain let up last minute - and it did! Right under the wire, the rain stopped and the ceremony chairs were put out on the lawn, overlooking Active Pass.

I've said it before, I'm a sap at ceremonies and this had all the feels. Melissa and Reno were smiling ear to ear and holding hands the whole time. They read the vows they wrote each other and their loved ones cheered them on.

We snuck away to do photos partway through the cocktail hour. We visited some sandstone cliffs of a nearby park with the bridal party and then drove to the forest. I think I squealed a little when we drove around the corner and realized the whole park was enveloped in fog. Fog is one of my favourite things to photograph. It adds a layer of mystery and depth - perfect for portraits.

The night continued with a delicious meal and heartfelt speeches.  Mother nature changed gears yet again and the sky light up with a vibrant pink sunset. And as promised, the dance party went late into the night.

Lisa & Evan's Mountain Wedding - Banff Wedding Photographer

Lisa and Evan were married on a mountainside on a August afternoon in Banff, Alberta. With their daughter as their flower girl, and the Rockies as their backdrop, friends and families gathered to witness their vows and celebrate late into the night.

I was so happy to make the trip from Vancouver Island to photograph this Alberta wedding. I've known Lisa for years now, and I got to photograph her brother's wedding in Thailand a few years ago. To be asked back to document her wedding was such a nice feeling. One of the gifts of this profession is when friends become clients and clients become friends.
