Rain on Your Wedding Day

Ok, time for some real talk! You have control over most aspects of your wedding day, but the weather ain’t one of them. I know Alanis Morissette didn’t do us any favours with her song Ironic, and that line “It’s like rain, on your wedding day…,” but, with a little preparedness, there is nothing to fear. In fact, some say it’s a good luck charm—bring on that money!

Have umbrellas

You should prepare for the possibility of rain in the early stages of planning. If you’re having an outdoor ceremony, source a few umbrellas for you and your bridal party. If you’re having an indoor ceremony, but plan on doing portraits outside, same advice!

Clear umbrellas are best, because the light can still shine through, and your faces aren’t in dark shadows. You don’t have to break the bank on these, there are plenty of cheap options. You can also check local bridal groups on Facebook, lots of couples sell their umbrellas (and loads of other wedding decorations and items) once their wedding is over.

Source a tent

If you’re having an outdoor reception, see what plan your venue has in case of rain. Many times they have this figured out for you—bonus!

If you’re having your outdoor reception on a private property, renting a tent is the most common option. Lots of folks put up a tent where dinner will be served, regardless of the weather. You can find all sorts of tent styles too: from clear tents to white tents draped with lights, and everything in between.

If you are in love with the idea of dinner under the stars (like me!) plan for that, but have a backup. You can rent a tent and put it up only if absolutely necessary. Keep an eye on the forecast a few days before the wedding, and have a few volunteers designated for tent duty. You can even wait until the morning of to decide what you’ll need to do. If you have a wedding planner helping you with the logistics, they’ll take care of this (and so many other things) for you, so chat with them.

Help your guests prepare

If the wedding is happening outdoors, rain or shine, let your guests know. Remind them to bring an umbrella and rain jacket in your wedding updates. A little info goes a long way!

Let go of expectations

This is a tricky one, especially if you’re a big planner, but it’s so important and here’s why: so often, couples get wrapped up in planning, scheduling and trying to execute the perfect event, they lose sight of the ultimate goal: getting married to their lover! At a certain point you have to let go of your expectations and know that, regardless of rain, your wedding day is going to be incredible because you’re making a lasting commitment to your partner.

Enjoy the benefits!

Rain creates a cozy, romantic atmosphere, and adds that extra element that you and your guests won’t soon forget. It can help create beautiful, moody images too! No need to worry about your photographer or their gear. All professional photographers prepare for rain, and have rain covers and other tools to use their gear in any weather condition. And I promise we will get to create some extra-special photos!
